NARRATIVE:
Spriggs & Hollingsworth specializes in complex civil, criminal and administrative litigation and associated regulatory counseling. We present and defend cases at all levels of federal and state forums across the country. Our expertise extends beyond traditional litigation and counseling into innovative alternative dispute resolution at both international and domestic sites.
The firm is not departmentalized. Our core practices involve representing companies concerning (i) product liability, toxic tort and environmental liability matters; (ii) claims against the United States arising out of contracts and takings such as our Winstar case before the U.S. Supreme Court; (iii) white collar crime investigation and defense; (iv) insurance recoveries for product liability, environmental liability, and construction liability, among others; and (v) construction-related disputes. We regularly engage to represent companies in significant litigation outside of these areas (such as antitrust and other commercial disputes) because of our reputation for quality and cost-effective litigation and for creativity both in terms of legal theory and strategy and in terms of finding business solutions that meet our clients' interests. Our client base includes some of the largest companies in the country, US subsidiaries of foreign multinational, and smaller and medium sized companies as well; we have particularly strong ties to pharmaceutical and chemical companies, defense contractors, construction companies, financial services companies, and the nuclear power industry, among others; several of our clients have worked with our lawyers for two decades. Our pro bono work is coordinated by one of the firm's associates.
Spriggs & Hollingsworth provides unique training opportunities to our associates so as to equip them to assume greater responsibility and to become more sophisticated substantively early in their careers. To this end, in addition to training in legal advocacy, deposition skills, and writing, we bring in outside specialists to conduct multi-part seminars on visual evidence and on accounting for lawyers; we also have utilized our own people for a four-part internal seminar on mass products liability and one on legal writing. The firm also embraces the use of technology to augment the practice of law, and we are nationally recognized leaders and experts in this area.
We are committed to paying our lawyers commensurate with their
abilities, and to this end, the firm's salary for Fall 2005 is (as
of this writing) $125,000. We also offer a merit bonus based on
quality of work, productivity, effort and the success of the firm.
Salary increases are set individually based on performance, and
we believe that our associates are paid comparable to (and some
more than) their peers at other top firms in Washington, DC. At
the same time, we recognize that associates and everyone else at
the firm need to have an outside life, and we work hard to enable
everyone to achieve the appropriate balance bearing in mind the
sophistication of our practice and the needs of our clients.
Our firm is growing and dynamic, and our trajectory both is exciting and provides great opportunity for the right people. We are looking for lawyers that are committed to applying their legal skills to sophisticated problems and producing legal work of the highest quality and that are dedicated to becoming the finest lawyers, and particularly trial and appellate lawyers, in the country.
